Marley Station has long been a destination spot for residents of Anne Arundel and surrounding counties. “We want the community to be proud of the mall, to shop here and to want to shop here.” “A mall is only as good as its merchants, and the stronger the merchants are, the more customers who will come,” Hess said. He said Miller’s 47 years of cinema experience and his familiarity with the area will help increase the mall’s credibility within the community and beyond. Hess grew up on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and spent 20 years living in Baltimore County before settling in Anne Arundel in 2013. Marley Station general manager, John Hess, said at least eight other movie companies expressed interest in taking over the mall’s theaters. Horizon Cinemas is independently owned and operated by lifelong Baltimore residents, according to Miller. “Regal did a nice job, but I thought we could do better.” “The theater, to me, had tremendous potential,” Miller said. Nearly every aspect of the former theater has been upgraded or replaced entirely, and Miller said he thinks Horizon’s new patrons will enjoy how the company operates. Ira Miller, owner of Horizon Cinemas, said renovations on the mall’s theaters began soon after Regal’s exit. But Regal abruptly closed its doors in February. Regal Cinemas had been an anchor at Marley Station since the mall’s opening in 1987. The additional four screens at the mall are slated to open by midsummer. Marley Station Mall in Glen Burnie held the grand opening of Horizon Cinemas on June 20, with about 250 people waiting to be the first to obtain tickets to any of the four feature films being shown on four screens at the theater. Hundreds of fans clambered and jostled for position, dignitaries moved about behind steel gates, and the energy inside the building was akin to that of a movie premiere.
